De Montréal à l'Islande puis vers l'Angleterre. Le parcours du premier contingent des Fusiliers vers l'Europe.

Du 7 Juillet au 24 Octobre 1940, Islande

 

8 juillet, 1940
Nous sommes installes dans un camp temporaire a environ un mille de la capitale. Une autre difficulte est la lumiere durant 24 heures ce qui porte les hommes a veiller tard et les fatigue enormement du au manque de sommeil.

9 juillet, 1940
Une compagnie est partie ce matin a 0700hrs. Sous le commandemetn du Capitaine Gauvreau pour aller s'installer a environ 30 milles d'ici a un endroit appele Hveragerdi. Un des camions versa a un tournant et 8 de nos  hommes durent etre hospitalises. Rien de grave.

10 juillet, 1940

Toute la balance du Bataillon change de position aujourd'hui; la compagnie 'B' va a Kaldadarnes; les Compagnies 'C' D' et 'H.Q.' ainsi que le 'Bn.H.Q.' vont a Hveragerdi. Nous recevons des instructions au sujet des fatigues a l'aeroport de Kaldadarnes. Toujours du beau temps.

 

12 juillet, 1940

Ce soir a un endroit ou 6 de nos hommes sont en position dans la montagne, entre Hjalli et Hveragerdi, ils furent pris en flagrant delit d'avoir tue un mouton appartenant a un habitant; l'affaire fut arrangee a l'amiable en consideration d'une paiement de 55 Krona. Belle température.

 

12 juillet, 1940
3 de nos hommes pris sur un ilot ce matin a bonne heure pres du pont de Selfoss ou nous avons un ploton de la Cie. D. Le courant est tres rapide a cet endroit et le travail est enorme pour les sortir de la. 

 

15 juillet, 1940
Le Major Forget est alle faire une reconnaissance jusqu'a Vik dans le but de preparer l'installation d'un poste d'observation sur la mer.

 

19 juillet, 1940
4 hommes et l'interprete partent aujourd'hui pour occuper un fort a Vik situe a 90 milles du Bn.H.Q. Ces hommes partent avec 30 jours de ration.

22 juillet, 1940
Nous avons recu un compte aujourd'hui a propos de l'affaire des rescapes de Selfoss: resultat: 350 Krona a payer.

28 juillet, 1940

Nous faisons rapport a la Brigade que nous avons maintenant etabli des postes de surveillance sur la mer, a Vik et Eyrarbakki.

Report attached regarding a complaint made by Mr. Eyjolfur Gislason of Pura in Olfusa re: the shooting of sheep etc..

 

6 août, 1940
The owner of the little fishing boat which was damaged at Selfoss has sent us his bill which was promptly paid. 

 

Alert at our post at Vik at 0230 hours.

7 août, 1940
Lt.-Col Grenier together with Capt.Wise (Alabaster I.C.) and Capt Bonnell (Z Force I.C.), have gone to Vik to investigate yesterday's incident where one of our men was wounded.

14 août, 1940
Today we had the visit of an official photographer from the War Office and he took picture of our men at work.​

 

23 août, 1940
A compaint is received from the Sheriff at Arnessysly on behalf of a farmer located at Sandvik, this will have to be settle by the C.R.E.

18 août, 1940
The padre went to B coy at Kaldadarnes in order to celebrate mass for our men, the airforce and the A.M.P.C.; this was at 0700 hours, and at 1030 he was back in Hveragerdi to celebrate mass for other troops at Bn.H.Q. A coy was at work on the airdrome.​​

5 septembre, 1940
Seven of our officers are attending a dance in Reykjavik. The benefits are for the Red Cross Society. Rhum issue for all ranks tonight.

8 septembre, 1940

We had a mass in the open air and Mr. Stevens a representative of the Canadian Press was present.

11 septembre, 1940

We now have one platoon located in Baldurshagi, which is to be our winter location, the question of bathing for this platoon is raised with Bridage.​ The Vik coast watch post has been relieved by the marines.

 

15 septembre, 1940

A complaint was received from a farmer who owns a piece of land in the Kaldadarnes area.

16 septembre, 1940'A' Company has completed its move to winter quarters.

23 septembre, 1940

Complaint made by a farmer at Sandvik regarding the damage caused to his land by widening a road passing through and thereby filling a creek and causing much damage.  'C' Company has completed its move to winter quarters. 

 

27 septembre, 1940
One platoon from D company left today to take over the guard of the Vatnsendu wireles station.

 

1 octobre, 1940

One of our men of the signals platoon D61918 pte. Lucien Paiement died today at the 50th General Hospital after an operation for the appendicitis.

 

3 octobre, 1940

Tonight at 2300 hours all the bn. was located at our winter quarters with the exception of B company which moved from Kaldadarnes to Hveragerdi. Road mending and building will have to be hastened at Baldurshagi. 

4 octobre, 1940
The morning in the Catholic cathedral of Reykjavik we had a service for D61918 pte Lucien Paiement who died on the 1st. Approximately 150 members of the unit were present.

17 octobre, 1940

One of our men was drowned in an automobile accident.


21 octobre, 1940
A mobile picket is organized to patrol the streets of Reykjavik in the evenings.

 

22 octobre, 1940
We are advised by Brigadier Page that disciplinary action should be taken against one of our men who was with D61494 Cpl. Slevan A. who was drowned on the 17th.Oct.
